Frequently Asked Questions

Below are some of the more common questions we are asked about the products we stock. If your question isn't here or you would rather to talk to someone please get in touch.

How does it stick on?

The Megaware KeelGuard® uses an advanced 3M® pressure sensitive adhesive tape already bonded to the Megaware KeelGuard. By simply preparing the keel with the provided tools and primer, the Megaware KeelGuard adheres to the hull creating a permanent bond, giving you years of protection and performance.

Will the Megaware KeelGuard create drag and reduce the speed of my boat?

No, the Megaware KeelGuard is designed with hydrodynamics in mind. Megaware KeelGuard’s patented drag reduction design will not slow a boat or diminish its performance.

Does a dealer need to install the Megaware KeelGuard or can I do it myself?

Many marine dealers or fiberglass companies can install the Megaware KeelGuard for you or you can do it yourself. Each Megaware KeelGuard kit includes everything needed for a professional installation except the cleaning agent, isopropyl alcohol, used in step 2. By following the step-by-step instructions, you can install the Megaware KeelGuard yourself in about one hour or less.

Will the Megaware KeelGuard go over strakes or chines?

Yes, the Megaware KeelGuard material is very pliable and will easily conform to most hull strakes and angles; however, there are specific instructions to follow when applying over these. Please read carefully the written instructions included with the KeelGuard.

What is the Megaware KeelGuard made of?

The Megaware KeelGuard is a composite comprised of a blend of polymers and urethanes with special plasticizers and UV inhibitors to provide the very best blending of abrasion resistance and bonding qualities. This combination of strength and bonding has made it possible for Megaware KeelGuard to provide the best lifetime warranty on the market for keel protection.

Will the Megaware KeelGuard create drag and reduce the speed of my boat?

No, the Megaware KeelGuard is designed with hydrodynamics in mind. Megaware KeelGuard’s patented drag reduction design will not slow a boat or diminish its performance.

Is it possible to remove the Megaware KeelGuard, and if so, will it damage the gel coat?

In the unlikely event you need to remove a Megaware KeelGuard, it can be done. The 3M® adhesive is designed to shear apart if enough strength and energy is exerted. Some of the adhesive will remain on the Megaware KeelGuard and some on the boat. The remaining adhesive can be removed from the boat with a plastic or nylon putty knife or a decal/pinstripe removal disk. We can provide more detailed instructions upon request.

Can I apply the Megaware KeelGuard over boat bottom paint or anti-fouling paint?

If your boat has anti-fouling boat bottom paint applied, it must be removed to expose the original gelcoat where the KeelGuard will be installed. If desired, boat bottom or anti-fouling paint can be applied over the Megaware KeelGuard once it has been installed.
